Monitoring History with Modern Tools

The Boskapel van Imde, a cherished historical chapel nestled near Wolvertem, stands as a testament to local history and architectural heritage. Like many aging structures, its intricate facade, including delicate ornaments and structural elements, requires careful monitoring to ensure its preservation. Traditional inspection methods can be costly, time-consuming, and potentially intrusive or risky. HOVVR provided a detailed, non-invasive inspection solution using advanced drone technology and photogrammetry techniques to assess the chapel's facade condition accurately and efficiently.

Precision Planning and Execution

Conducting drone operations near sensitive areas requires meticulous planning and adherence to regulations. Our mission at the Boskapel van Imde involved several key considerations:

  • Regulatory Compliance: The flight was conducted under the Open Category A2 regulations. Crucially, the chapel lies within the Very Low Level zone 2 (VLL2) associated with Brussels Airport (EBBR). This required specific awareness and adherence to airspace restrictions.

  • Minimizing Disruption: To ensure the safety of the public and maintain operational integrity without disturbing the peaceful surroundings, the flight was scheduled for 7:00 AM. This early start guaranteed minimal presence of uninvolved persons within the operational flight area.

  • Efficient Data Capture: The entire flight operation lasted approximately 23 minutes. During this short window, our drone systematically captured 630 high-resolution photographs covering every angle of the chapel's facade.

The Power of Photogrammetry: From photos to actionable insights

The hundreds of captured images are just the raw data. The real magic happens in the processing stage, turning these photos into a powerful analytical tool:

  1. Point Cloud Generation: Using specialized photogrammetry software, the overlapping photographs are analyzed to identify common points from multiple angles. These points are calculated in 3D space, creating a dense 'point cloud' – millions of individual points representing the chapel's external surfaces.

  2. Mesh and 3D Model Creation: The point cloud is then processed to create a connected surface mesh, effectively 'connecting the dots' to form solid geometry. This mesh is then textured using the original photographs, resulting in a high-resolution, photo-realistic 3D model of the Boskapel.

  3. Detailed Inspection: This accurate digital twin of the chapel allows for thorough inspection from any angle on a computer screen. Stakeholders can virtually 'walk around' the building, zoom in on specific areas, and assess the condition of masonry, joints, ornaments, and potential defects like cracks or weathering. Critically, the underlying high-resolution photos are linked to the model, allowing users to click on any part of the 3D surface and view the original, detailed photograph of that exact spot for close-up examination.

This process provides a comprehensive, measurable, and easily shareable overview of the facade's condition, forming a crucial baseline for maintenance planning and conservation efforts.
